Monthly Round Up

So, I couldn’t think of a better way to start this now as spring is setting in and new life is bursting in our garden. As I sit here piecing together the first monthly round up, my dog is begging me for a belly rub.

Following from my note I posted a few weeks back I wanted to introduce this monthly round up as a number of you beauts are interested in either books or Interior shot on film. I recently listened to Lucy Lumens podcast about “In defence of gatekeeping”and it had me thinking. Me being on here I want to show the ins and out of my professional work and my personal work. What books I have sitting on my shelves and other creatives work that inspire me. So, here’s to no gate keeping!

BOOKS

  • A couple of years ago I picked a beautiful book up by Tanizaki's. “In Praise of Shadows” who writes stunningly about the collision between shadows of traditional Japanese Interiors and the dazzling light of modern age. It’s a stunning piece of writing and I would highly recommend it. It has defiantly shaped my body of work to embracing those deep shadows!

  • A book by Daisuke Hirabayashi called “Koechlin House” this is cinematic meets interiors meet architecture bliss! It’s incredibly shot by Daisuke who has captured this piece of artwork. He has the ability to showcase the imperfections that liveable homes/spaces come with. Daisuke is honest in what he captures and it is a pleasure to flick through.

  • Fred Herzog Modern Color is a classic and I have flicked and flicked through this book many of time and I love it! It was one of my very first if not my first photo book I got as a gift from my wife. Fred Herzog work is a lovely mix of urban landscapes and street photography and you won’t be disappointed with the vibrant tones of Kodachrome!

Recommended fellow newsletters

I’ve been really enjoying reading newsletters since coming to Substack. It has allowed me to slow down when using social media. I’ve noticed a really cool community amongst the photographers who are generally keen in seeing your work but also to build a report with one another, it's been a really cool start and I’m stoked to see how this platform will develop.

I wanted to some time to share with you three creatives I’ve been really enjoying reading. They bring such a different way of writing but also bite size take aways that has left me inspired and wanting to find out more.

The Power of Color in Photography by RAZLYN LYSAUGHT

I really enjoyed reading this! It’s something I haven’t necessarily acknowledged but the thought and graft that went into this specific newsletter was top shelf! Give it a read!

Storytelling Through Travel Photography - by RANIA RÖNNTOFT

Was a very thought provoking piece. I really like Rania’s work and the time I have spent on Substack I have really enjoyed reading her posts.

Newsletter ideas 10 Substack Newsletter Ideas For Photographers - by LUCY LUMEN

If you have trouble finding structure and topics for your newsletter like I did and still do! I recommend you guys checking this one out and head over to her Newsletter Ideas. It’s a great read! Also her work is pukka! (London slang for “excellent”)

In recent news

I’ll keep this one short and sweet but it is one I wanted to share with you fellow Substackers!

A piece of my personal work has officially been submitted for Revelry Collection vol 001. This has left me buzzing for many days as this is an all film photography magazine and quite frankly that’s where my heart is.

PRINT IS BACK! and I’m here for it.

Thank you for reading :)
